    Oledcomm Installs Their LiFi Systems in The First Nursery School, Chantefleur, in L’Isle-Adam, Paris

    Last month, Oledcomm released a news article on their website. They announced the 1st LiFi installation in Chantefleur nursery school in L’Isle-Adam. The school becomes the first kindergarten in the Paris region to be equipped with this technology. This is a symbolic step forward for LiFi and for the education sector and promises to open up new educational opportunities. Oledcomm further wrote the following statement:

    “If the Chantefleur kindergarten decided to take the plunge and equip its classrooms with a LiFi installation, it is because this technology is an ultra-efficient, healthy, reliable and regulatory alternative to traditional technologies.”

    Oledcomm wrote the following points about the advantages of installing LiFi in nursery schools:

    • LiFi works without radio waves and therefore meets the current public health challenges by allowing children to evolve in a healthy environment.

    • It consumes about 50% less electricity than traditional technologies and is therefore also part of the sustainable development approach of communities.

    • LiFi allows children, and even toddlers, to safely access a fun way to approach certain subjects in their learning.

    • Thanks to its ultra-fast and latency-free connection, LiFi gives teachers the opportunity to set up rich and varied educational activities without health risks, but also to communicate with parents and other students.

    • The LiFiMAXTab tablet with integrated LiFi is easy for children to use. It is wireless, allowing students to communicate with each other and other classes in the school to benefit from LiFi, even if they don’t have an installation.

    • Thanks to this diversification of teaching aids, children who have difficulty with paper-based materials (due to visual or learning disabilities, for example) now have additional, more accessible channels for developing their skills.

    • Installing a LiFi system in the classroom is quick, simple and discreet. There is no need to consider major work and make the room inaccessible for several days: it takes only one afternoon to equip a room!

    What is LiFi?

    LiFi, also known as "Light Fidelity" is a wireless optical networking technology, which uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to transmit data. In 2011, professor Harald Haas made a LiFi demonstration at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Global Talk on Visible Light Communication (VLC).

    VLC uses light as a medium to deliver high-speed communication like Wi-Fi and complies with the IEEE standard IEEE 802.15.7. The IEEE 802.15.7 is a high-speed, bidirectional, and fully networked wireless communication technology-based standard similar to Wi-Fi's IEEE 802.11.

    How does LiFi work?

    LiFi is a high speed, bidirectional, and fully networked wireless communication of data using light. LiFi constitutes of several light bulbs that form a wireless network.

    When an electrical current goes through to a LED light bulb, a stream of light (photons) emits from the lamp. LED bulbs are semiconductor devices, which means that the brightness of the light flowing through them can change at extremely high speeds. The signal is sent by modulating the light at different rates. The signal can then be received by a detector that interprets the changes in light intensity (the signal) as data. Also when the LED is ON, you transmit a digital 1, and when it is OFF, you transmit a 0.

    The primary benefits of LiFi are as follows:

    Security: Provides entirely secure access. Where there is no light there is no data.

    Safety: Does not produce electromagnetic radiation and does not interfere with existing electronic systems.

    Localisation: Allows localisation due to the small coverage area of LiFi access point - localisation can be used for very precise asset tracking.

    Data density: Provides ubiquitous high-speed wireless access that offers substantially greater data density (data rate per unit area) than RF through high bandwidth reuse.

      On Thursday 06th October 2022, the 5 sure 7 Matins platform invited Dr Sanya Max Fréjus and Anaïs Nassara to discuss LiFi technology and their LiFi prototype. During the discussion, Anaïs stated that their first objective behind their LiFi work was to make the LiFi technology known to the Beninese population because it is not known worldwide, especially in Africa. Dr Sanya Max Fréjus explained in simple terms the principles of LiFi technology to the audience.

      Below are some of the statements from the video. These statements have been translated from French to English:

      Rachida: “So, the second innovation of the day is that of our friend Anaïs. And what is this innovation? Whom I call on this set and will meet us in a moment”.

      Dr Fréjus Sanya : “Alright. So Anaïs worked on the first prototype. This is also the very first faucet in fact, which speaks of LiFi to interconnect terminals. I call terminals or big smartphones or downright computers to take these more familiar examples. As you know, LiFi is a concept similar to wifi. So with WiFi, we all use to share and exchange data. Okay, but it's a wireless medium that uses radio waves. So today, thanks to LiFi, with the light that surrounds us, it is also possible to always communicate, exchange, and transmit information very quickly. And it is moreover on this technology that Anaïs Nassara worked to allow us from now on to be able to exchange data between us at home or at the office. That's what she works for”.

      Rachida: “Anaïs Hello, well done already for this innovation. What's the idea behind all this?”

      Anaïs Nassara: “Thank you very much for this opportunity to speak. The first objective behind this work was already to make the LiFi technology known to the Beninese population because it is a technology that has emerged, I would say since 2011, but which is not known worldwide, especially in Africa. So, the first objective was really to make this technology known and also to prove, to show that in our context, the Beninese context, that such a prototype can be made in order to be able to transmit data.”

      Rachida: “Okay to transmit LiFi. In fact, it allows you to communicate data simply. Is that right? In fact, we need to understand the usefulness of this innovation.”

      Dr Fréjus Sanya: “LiFi actually enables communication. We already have several communication technologies based on radio frequencies, such as WiFi for example. And with WiFi, we have the ability to connect to the Internet, to be able to do our research and all that goes with it. We can actually do the same thing with the LiFi, which is not there in fact to play with and is part of the wifi, but rather comes, in fact, to support the wifi because we cannot use the wifi in different environments such as hospitals. And it's actually easier to already use the light that is already present everywhere. Especially with the evolution of the lighting fixtures we use, we have moved from fluorescent lamps to LED lamps and now with the presence of lamps using our various infrastructures and as much as possible, it is now possible to be able to use these LED lamps to transmit data.”

      Rachida: “Alright. So Doctor Sanya,  you are the one supervising these different students. What is the originality of Anaïs through this innovation?”

      Dr Fréjus Sanya: “Thank you Rachida. In fact, you understand that LiFi is not very concrete in Benin.”

      Rachida: “We didn't know. I too am discovering.”

      Dr Fréjus Sanya: “Yes, so it was important to show, in fact, to make people discover what LiFi is and to show that for us, developing countries, we already have a technology which is present and which we ignore. And so, by using this technology now will allow us to go faster in the data fields.  Thanks to the work of Anaïs, we proved that we could point to it and use this light for transmitting data between systems without deploying other infrastructures that will cost us dearly. Finally, in fact, to the exchange of data and the originality of her work, that is, she first understood what it means to implement, what LiFi is and the degree of agreement in the transfer of data between two computers. “

      Rachida: “So. Where did this idea come from, Anaïs?”

      Anaïs Nassara: “So, a year ago, actually, I saw senior student who worked on LiFi.  Also at the time, and seeing his work, I was inspired. I wanted in fact to bring more to society, to bring more in fact to the continent, I would even say. So, wanting to work on this project, I became interested in this project to be able to make the first prototype in order to show Yes, we can make it. We may also have LiFi prototypes in Benin.”

      Rachida: “And what stage of this innovation are we at today? Is it already popularised? What stage are we at?”

      Dr Fréjus Sanya:  “Yes, we have already popularised it, precisely because we are in close collaboration with a LiFi technology company which is based in Nigeria and. England and a partner in Texas, Mr Ken Peterson. They wants to help us in developing further this prototype as well as going through the various inventions that we have made recently so that our populations can have kits available. And already, we have a pilot phase of an agreement. I'm not going to lay out everything he said because it's under approval. So, that from now on, it can really only be something known by all and used by all.”

        LEDs Magazine interviewed the Co-CEOs of Oledcomm, Benjamin Azoulay and Pierre-Jean Beylier. In their article, LEDs Magazine stated that “Oledcomm” stands for “optical LED communications.” The “oled” in the moniker is unrelated to organic light-emitting diodes.

        Oledcomm stated that they are now completely focused on using infrared, also known as “invisible light.”

        In a commensurate market shift, Oledcomm is now focusing on selling their LiFi products into the Defense, Aerospace, and Airline industries. They think that these sectors will benefit from transmitting data via infrared methods.

        Azoulay and Beylier also stated that they have deprioritised the goal of outfitting consumer laptops, tablets, and phones with chips that would enable users to use light for internet communications in the same manner that radio-based Wi-Fi does today.  This is due to the slow consumer Li-Fi uptake. From a LiFi Tech News’ perspective, this is also due to the lack of awareness of LiFi in the mass market.

         

        Benjamin Azoulay stated that:

        “We were all dreaming about having Li-Fi being integrated into smartphones and tablets, etcetera, etcetera” …

        “I personally strongly believed in that a few years ago, because we were having concrete projects with smartphone manufacturers and with IoT manufactures. But at the end of the day, it did not materialise.”

         

        Pierre-Jean Beylier added:

        “But over the last two years, I’ve seen a tremendous change and a tremendous acceleration”.

        “Not in consumer, but in, I would say, industrial opportunities. Where the LiFi technology solves problems that today cannot be solved by any other technology.” 

        LiFi is generally regarded as far more secure than Wi-Fi, as it requires line of sight to intercept

        “You cannot detect it, you cannot jam it,” said Beylier. “The war in Ukraine has put LiFi in the spotlight. It’s on everybody’s lips. Armies are looking at LiFi as a way to reduce the electromagnetic signature, and as a way to improve mobility in a high-intensity war.” 

        “You think of the cost of fuel, you think about the carbon neutrality objectives of the airlines — replacing cables and saving hundreds of kilos in an aircraft is extremely attractive,” said Beylier.

        LEDs Magazine then asked Oledcomm of their use of 940-nm infrared light as opposed to visible light.

         

        Benjamin Azoulay responded: 

        “Air France was very clear that no traveller will accept having to switch on the lights to get access to the internet”.

        He further stated that there’s a broad and compelling reason to use infrared rather than visible light in general: It’s faster, because the phosphor coating used to coax blue LEDs into emitting visible white light slows down the modulation process used to encode data.

        “You get much better performance with infrared than with white LED,” Azoulay said. “The speed can be three times that of white.”

        Oledcomm has walked away from illumination. It previously tried partnering with lighting companies, but “it just did not work,” Azoulay said.

         

        Now, when the company is attempting to sell to commercial offices or the like, it does not approach the facilities department.

        “Oledcomm is a telecom of light company,” Azoulay said. “We are not a lighting company. We are not selling to the building ecosystem. We are selling to the IT ecosystem. We address the IT manager of the company.” The shift began in early 2020.

        “Oledcomm is not a lighting company,” said Beylier. “We are an optical communications company. And 100% of what we do today is based on invisible light.”

        “So in the industrial world and the Defense world, there is this very clear acceleration, not only in the discussions we’re having, but also in our revenue, which is increasing very significantly in 2022 from 2021,” said Beylier, whose background includes selling communications to Defense and aerospace. It’s going to be five to six times higher. So, it’s really an acceleration, but not in the consumer space, where I think it will take a number of years before we see something big.”

        “Yes, I think lasers have a clear role to play, I’m absolutely convinced about that,” said Azoulay.

        “We’re not suggesting that the name will change to Olasercomm. But we have it on good authority that the company indeed has laser projects underway”.

              Today, HomeGrid Forum released a press statement on their website. They stated that Oledcomm has joined HomeGrid Forum to contribute to the coexistence and interoperability testing needed for accelerating the market adoption of Light Fidelity (LiFi) using the G.hn backbone.

              HomeGrid Forum President Livia Rosu stated the following statements:

                Nowadays, there is a growing number of scenarios -in-house domestic applications, traffic lights, hospitals, hotels, etc.- where illumination devices based on visible LED lamps are used. This interest is not only motivated by economic reasons (as the price of individual lamps is still higher than that of traditional ones, although it is rapidly becoming cheaper and cheaper) but by energetic or environmental considerations. These lamps combine very low power consumption with an extremely long operational life, maintaining during all their operation the same chromaticity without significant changes. LED lamps can be also used as communications emitters without losing their main functionality as illumination sources. This technique (known as Visible Light Communications or VLC) does not only maintain the usual capabilities of wireless optical transceivers (robustness against EM interference, absence of EM compatibility constraints and secure transmissions as radiation is confined by walls) but is also eye-safe (as it uses visible wavelengths). Additionally, as they are used as lamps, the amount of optical emitted power is enough to provide full transmission coverage over a regular size room. So, they have a huge amount of low-cost COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) optical emitters available that can be used wherever we need to provide illumination and to broadcast data jointly.


                ELIoT H2020 Project


                As stated on their website, ELIoT is an EU Horizon 2020 project. It is led by the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. The central aim of the project is the development of mass-market Internet of Things (IoT) solutions using LiFi, a next-generation wireless communication network, that travels over light instead of radio waves. With LiFi, the ELIoT consortium will explore a networked wireless communication technology operating in the previously unused light spectrum, besides WiFi and cellular radio.

                ELIoT has started in 2019 as a project funded by the EU’s biggest Research and Innovation programme, Horizon 2020. This programme promises more breakthroughs by taking great ideas from lab to the market. ELIoT receives €6 million funding from the Public-Private Partnership ‘Photonics21’ and is formed by the partners Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), Nokia, MaxLinear, Deutsche Telekom, KPN, Weidmüller, LightBee, the University of Oxford, Eindhoven Technical University and the two Fraunhofer Institutes; Heinrich Hertz Institute and FOKUS. Even more, companies will shortly be added to the consortium as associated partners.

                VLC uses light as a medium to deliver high-speed communication like Wi-Fi and complies with the IEEE standard IEEE 802.15.7. The IEEE 802.15.7 is a high-speed, bidirectional, and fully networked wireless communication technology-based standard similar to Wi-Fi's IEEE 802.11.

                How does LiFi work?

                LiFi is a high speed, bidirectional, and fully networked wireless communication of data using light. LiFi constitutes of several light bulbs that form a wireless network.

                When an electrical current goes through to a LED light bulb, a stream of light (photons) emits from the lamp. LED bulbs are semiconductor devices, which means that the brightness of the light flowing through them can change at extremely high speeds. The signal is sent by modulating the light at different rates. The signal can then be received by a detector that interprets the changes in light intensity (the signal) as data. Also when the LED is ON, you transmit a digital 1, and when it is OFF, you transmit a 0.

                Security: Provides entirely secure access. Where there is no light there is no data.

                Safety: Does not produce electromagnetic radiation and does not interfere with existing electronic systems.

                Localisation: Allows localisation due to the small coverage area of LiFi access point - localisation can be used for very precise asset tracking.

                Data density: Provides ubiquitous high-speed wireless access that offers substantially greater data density (data rate per unit area) than RF through high bandwidth reuse.

                  On Monday 12th September 2022, Oledcomm, the expert in high-speed connectivity through invisible light (LiFi), has announced that Pierre-Jean Beylier has joined the company as Co-CEO, alongside Benjamin Azoulay, President and Co-CEO, and will focus primarily on strategy, business development and marketing. As LiFi is becoming a must-have wireless broadband technology, thanks to its absolute security, low latency and stable connection, Oledcomm is adding the skills of an entrepreneur recognised in the space and Defence industry, with a very international experience, especially in the United States and Asia-Pacific, as well as a track record in mergers and acquisitions and fundraising.

                  Pierre-Jean Beylier, a graduate from EMLYON and USC (MBA), co-founded Speedcast in 2000 in Hong Kong, a company specialising in satellite communications and providing connectivity services and solutions, particularly to the oil industry, the Maritime sector and Defence customers. First in charge of business development and then from 2004 as CEO, Pierre-Jean built a global leader in satellite communications through strong organic growth and 16 acquisitions. He also led Speedcast's IPO in Sydney in 2014, which reached a market capitalisation of over $1 billion at its peak. When he left Speedcast early 2020, the company had over $700 million (£600 million; $690 million) in revenue, with 1700 employees in 40 countries.

                   

                  Pierre-Jean Beylier, Co-CEO of Oledcomm, said the following: "I had the chance to meet Benjamin when I joined the Oledcomm Board at the end of 2020. I have been impressed by what Benjamin and his team have achieved.
