World's First Mountain Top LiFi Laser 5G Internet

In today’s article, we will discuss about the World's First Mountain Top LiFi Laser 5G Internet.  In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Sonam Wangchuk discussed LiFi laser technology on a mountain expedition adventure.

He firstly discussed how Starlink’s satellites, Google's balloons and Amazon's satellites are the cause of a lot of pollution and space garbage on Earth and in space. He then went on to talk about the need for internet connectivity in a school mountain around the Ladakh region. He narrated how the relevant parties set up the LiFi Laser system on the mountains and some of the challenges they encountered.

He further describes how this LiFi Laser 5G system operates.

Here are some of his statements from the video:

“Our colleagues tested the laser.  The laser beam in which the internet signal is hidden is transmitted from the tower and received by the receiver on the mountaintop. This light signal and then the transmitter which is there transmit it to the school and it comes to the receiver which was on the rooftop of the school.”

“So, this optical wireless communication technology turns the mountain with which we had a problem into a solution.”

“It is the receiver in which optical communication i.e., the laser is taken and then the signal from it is sent to the microcells which are on the top of the tower. The telecom company will feed it and then it will spread through the radio to the entire village. If it was in a remote village, then the signal behind the mountain would pass through that mountain.”

“It would reach this receiver and then taking the signal from it, the signal would start coming on your mobile phone in the whole village. This is a very cheap and effective way for any telecom company.”

Despite the harsh winter conditions, this technology has been successfully tested for two consecutive winters and resulted in providing high-speed internet connectivity to the Secmol school.

Sonam Wangchuk concluded with the following statement: “After all, we think this could be a viral solution. If we do this in an outside of box way and then this company can provide internet service in the entire hilly areas even to the poorest of the poor. This can be India's gift to the world. Mountain top optical wireless communication technology.”

    What is LiFi?

LiFi, also known as "Light Fidelity" is a wireless optical networking technology, which uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to transmit data. In 2011, Professor Harald Haas made a LiFi demonstration at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Global Talk on Visible Light Communication (VLC).

VLC uses light as a medium to deliver high-speed communication like Wi-Fi and complies with the IEEE standard IEEE 802.15.7. The IEEE 802.15.7 is a high-speed, bidirectional, and fully networked wireless communication technology-based standard similar to Wi-Fi's IEEE 802.11.

    How does LiFi work?

LiFi is a high speed, bidirectional, and fully networked wireless communication of data using light. LiFi constitutes of several light bulbs that form a wireless network.

When an electrical current goes through to a LED light bulb, a stream of light (photons) emits from the lamp. LED bulbs are semiconductor devices, which means that the brightness of the light flowing through them can change at extremely high speeds. The signal is sent by modulating the light at different rates. The signal can then be received by a detector that interprets the changes in light intensity (the signal) as data. Also when the LED is ON, you transmit a digital 1, and when it is OFF, you transmit a 0.

    LiFi Benefits

The primary benefits of LiFi are as follows:

Security: Provides entirely secure access. Where there is no light there is no data.

Safety: Does not produce electromagnetic radiation and does not interfere with existing electronic systems.

Localisation: Allows localisation due to the small coverage area of LiFi access point - localisation can be used for very precise asset tracking.

Data density: Provides ubiquitous high-speed wireless access that offers substantially greater data density (data rate per unit area) than RF through high bandwidth reuse.
