May 16th, 2019 marks the worldwide celebration of the second edition of the International Day of Light.  The International Day of Light is an official observance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization  (UNESCO)  that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in diverse fields such  as medicine, communications, and energy.   The broad theme of light allows many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrates how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO, which are education, equality, and peace.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) opened an accelerator centre equipped with Li-Fi equipment in London. This was in partnership with the UK Leading Li-Fi company, pureliFi. pureLiFi is a pioneering Li-Fi company engaged in the research and development of Li-Fi and visible light communication technologies.  pureLiFi seeks to resolve the global struggle for diminishing wireless capacity resulting in the Spectrum Crunch.

Professor Haas discussed the humble beginning of pureLiFi starting from a few researchers in a lab to the growing scale-up it is today with 133 deployments across more than 23 countries. Haas discussed the Li-Fi products that pureLiFi has made over the years from the bulky Li-1st to the powerful chip known as GigaLiFi.  The professor explained the potential Li-Fi will offer in the many decades or centuries to come. Haas also shared a few case studies of where Li-Fi is making a difference for industries such as in retail, defence, transport, manufacturing, marine, finance, etc…

“We actually see Li-Fi in every light bulb, every car, every street, every smartphone, every toaster, everywhere. It will connect us.”

“It will be the nervous system that enable the industrial revolution”

Alistair, CEO of pureLiFi, said: “My goal as running the company is to stay ahead. I’m pushing integration, increasing performance, making power down, making small enough, making sure we get into these small mobile devices.”
